How To Install Ubuntu On Mac Mini

Step 1 – ISO image

  1. Download the ‘ubuntu-14.04-server-amd64.iso’ image.
  2. Burn this iso image on a CD-ROM.
  3. Note: You can even use a USB flash drive to boot.

Step 2 – Installation

  1. Insert the CD-ROM or USB flash drive into your Mac Mini computer.
  2. If you have the USB-to-Ethernet adapter, use it to connect Ethernet uplink for your external Internet connection.
  3. Turn on the Mac Mini computer.
  4. At the same time, hold the alt/option key.
  5. Now, you will see a list of boot options on the screen.
  6. Choose the Install Ubuntu Server option.
  7. Specify your country, language, and keyboard layout.
  8. If you are using the USB-to-Ethernet adapter, you will be prompted for the primary network interface.
  9. Select your Ethernet uplink.
  10. If you see the ‘Configuring network with DHCP’ message, press Enter.
  11. Select Continue Do not configure the network at this time.
  12. Provide the necessary details.
  13. When you see the Partition screen, select the Yes option.
  14. Continue with the on-screen prompts to finish the installation.
  15. Once done, press Enter.
  16. Remove the CD-ROM or USB flash drive from the Mac Mini computer.

Step 3 – Login after reboot

  1. Log in to your Mac device.
  2. To find its external IP address, use the ‘ifconfig -a’ command.
  3. Also, you have to find the MAC address of the USB-Ethernet adapter if you are using it.
  4. Perform the following steps.
  5. Add the second hard drive
  6. Optimize the swap volume
  7. Configure the internal network interface
  8. Update all packages
  9. Update /etc/hosts file
  10. Note: If you are using an older version of Mac Mini, you have to clear the existing partitions and install Ubuntu.
